Similar scenes played out in parts of Virginia as the storm raced seaward. The Red Cross says about 13,000 houses may have been destroyed or damaged in the Bahamas due to Hurricane Dorian, The Guardian reports. The island of New Providence was reportedly experiencing power outages lasting over 15 hours, and Royal Bahamas police chief Samuel Butler said the weather was too severe for rescue crews to save stranded individuals. Some 7.3 million homes in the U.S. are at risk of being destroyed by hurricane storm surge, according to an annual report released this week. Older concrete block homes, espcially ones from the 1960s and earlier, do not have this strong connection between the tie beam and the foundation.
Power outages affected nearly 400,000 electricity customers in Florida at their greatest extent, representing about 4% of the state. According to the Edison Electric Institute, at one point 1.2 million electricity customers were without power in several east coast and southern states. Estimated damage from Michael throughout the United States reached $25 billion.

Several insurance companies declined or did not respond to requests for comment for this story. Such cases are sometimes signaled by Civil Remedy Notices filed with the state, which put carriers on the clock to respond to demands for fair payment. Lawyers call the insurers greedy, driven by bottom lines instead of moral centers. They track stories of clients offered just a few thousand dollars, only to receive tens or hundreds of thousands more when they use legal letterhead. Billboards advertise law firms and public adjusters along U.S. 98 from Port St. Joe into Mexico Beach as the disaster economy churns.
The road connecting Carrabelle and St. George Island was washed out every few hundred feet. Along the coast of Franklin County from Alligator Point to Bald Point, the roofs of several homes were blown away; beach erosion also occurred throughout the extent. As Michael's waves repeatedly battered Dog Island, some of the 15 ships wrecked by the 1899 Carrabelle hurricane became exposed. Owing to the concave geometry of Apalachicola Bay, the 10 ft (3.0 m) storm surge produced by Michael along the coast Wakulla County was particularly damaging.

Michael has left more than 1.3 million households and businesses without power across Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. "The worst thing you can do now is act foolishly" by putting yourself in danger or keeping law enforcement from saving lives, he said at a news conference. As cleanup and rescue efforts were underway Thursday, Gov. Scott urged residents to stay off the roads.

In Albany, where wind gusts reached 74 mph (119 km/h), 24,270 electrical customers lost power. Numerous trees fell on homes and roads, blocking about 100 intersections. Winds also ripped siding off of homes and shattered windows at the convention center. Three tornadoes were spawned by Michael in Georgia, including a high-end EF1 tornado in Crawford County that knocked down several trees onto homes and destroyed. An 11-year-old girl in Seminole County died after debris fell on her home.
Hurricane Sally – affected the Gulf Coast of Alabama and western Florida panhandle as a Category 2 hurricane. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has since requested, with the storm's elevation to Category 5, the federal relief share be increased from 75% to 90%. As of April 2019, either value awaits passage of a specific relief package being delayed in the United States House of Representatives. The sixth-grader recently was in a school play and started playing trumpet in her school band. The Environmental Protection Agency says there were no reports of oil spills or other hazardous materials, as occurred during Hurricane Harvey last year in Houston and Hurricane Florence last month in the Carolinas. But boil water advisories are in effect in about eight locations impacted by Hurricane Michael.
All of these differences are why most of the recently built concrete block homes were damaged, but not destroyed in the hurricane. According to Douglas Baber, Mexico Beach city administrator, about 85% of the city's homes were damaged by the storm, with the "vast majority" of those destroyed. The town also lost many other structures, including its grocery store, two gas stations, civic center, public pier, police station and fire station. Brock Long, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said Mexico Beach was "ground zero" for damage.

A helicopter dropped water and food at the facility on Thursday after a tree downed during the storm caused a water line to break. Michael left North Carolina behind with rivers rising and more than 530,000 households in the dark. The power outages were concentrated in central North Carolina’s Piedmont region, where motorists had to be rescued Thursday from cars trapped by high water. Flashing flooding also was reported in the big North Carolina cities of Charlotte and Raleigh.
Storm surge also engulfed the bottom floor, destroying three of their cars. Rose Young points out the empty lot across U.S. 98 from her condo in Mexico Beach. The houses that once stood on that property were destroyed, along with many other buildings in the area, when Hurricane Michael hit in October 2018. Her home was inundated with 4 feet of water during the worst of the storm surge, but structurally, the two-story home is still intact. Instead of going back to Arkansas, though, Dame has made Mexico Beach her permanent home. She lives upstairs and works most days to restore the downstairs part of her home.
The estimated cost to rebuild if every vulnerable home in Miami was destroyed would be $166 billion. In the New York City metropolitan area, the price tag could be as high as $330 billion.
